The Promise of Rain

Lightning snaps as the thunder lumbers
The brewing clouds herald a coming storm
Deafened ears as if each seem a slumber
Desire for rains of relief for hearts that mourn
Darken skies pass without what's promised
The once verdant pastures can not elude feeling scorned
The empty clouds could appear no more honest
The outstretched flora could not be less informed
Over the horizon they make an unwelcome absence
Sun-scorched riverbeds now blistered into brittle clay
The veins through which they flowed and nourished
From here to yonder barren lands lay
Parched winds desperately prowl its vastness
Fear fueled fangs sink in to drain it dry
Gluttony to blame for a deed so disastrous
Demands that surpass the scope of the sky
Roots running deep still held memories of wisdom
Yearning for hope or perhaps peace of mind
Ever reaching upwards to mend the schism
Bramble and bare branches last envoys of their kind
Like prayers to the heavens they hope to be heard
The rainfall will embrace them, in this they put faith
Petals and stems adorned with flowers will emerge
For it is the sun and the moon that determines the time and date
